Maps, Murals and Measurements

‚ÄčAlice Dansey-Wright, who is working on a Tramway Local Commission, gives us an update:

'I'm now just over a third of the way through my project timeline for the Tramway Local commission and I've been very busy!

IMG_0287.jpgI've been on two walks around the Govanhill and Pollokshields areas - taking photos, talking to people and finding out what is available for the local community.

With the help of local groups, organisations and visitors
to Tramway (as well as desk research) I've drawn up two maps that will be turned into a mural in the new children & family space within the Tramway Café.

I'm going to include local landmarks and places of interest as well as decorative patterns and shapes inspired by what I've seen as I've been walking and looking closely atthe local areas. As part of my research I also visited the Glasgow City archives at the Mitchell library and explored their collection of old postal maps, including maps of Pollokshields and Govanhill from over 100 years ago- a lot has changed since then!

Thank you to everyone who came along to see me at the two Open Studio events- your help and input is much appreciated and will contribute towards the completed children & family space.

So what's next? I've been taking notes and measurements as the space will shortly be painted and prepped, ready for me to start the mural mid August. I'll also be working on a map and trail for children to use within the larger Tramway space - check back here for details!'
