One of the most significant developments in Tramway’s twenty-year history has been the creation of the Hidden Gardens.
Situated on what was once a debris field of bricks and rubble harking back to the partial demolition of the building in 1987/88, this beautiful and tranquil garden started life as a Tramway open commission to NVA (www.nva.org.uk). The company was invited to produce a new work for Tramway following our Lottery funded re-launch in 2000. Our surprise at NVA’s suggested project – to create a garden of peace at the rear of Tramway – soon gave way to the wondrous possibilities this type of project could provide for the building’s future.
Since opening, the Hidden Gardens has attracted more than 70,000 visitors and established itself as one of Glasgow’s must see landmarks, winning major design and regeneration awards. The unique attraction of the Hidden Gardens lies in its diverse and flexible nature: from peaceful haven one day, to thriving centre of activity the next. The Gardens never fail to delight and surprise.
The Hidden Gardens is proof of the lasting legacy that Tramway continues to provide for it’s local environment, the community, the City and further a-field. It is a special place, cherished by all those who visit and spend time here.
