Adapting For Distortion + Haptic
Hiroaki Umeda (Japan)
www.hiroakiumeda.com
Hiroaki Umeda is a man of synthesis and speed. Drawing on western classical dance sources for the fundamentals of his work, he soon made use of hiphop to generate body movements which have rounded off by his Japanese influence of Butoh. His pieces are more about sensations, as an increasing evidence of man fading away with the advent of technological supremacy. The aesthetic propositions offered by this multi-talented artist – Umeda is a choreographer, sound, image and lighting designer and performer – who locates his dance at the heart of electronic and digital material. Kinetic art, computer innovation and lighting all serve a work of minimalist and radical beauty. Haptic and Adapting for Distortion are perfect illustrations of it.
Hiroaki Umeda was born in 1977 and currently lives and works in Tokyo. Since the creation of his dance company, he choreographed many solos and performed at cutting-edge international dance festivals. He recently started choreographing to other dancers and working on video installations as an extension of his solo project.
Hiroaki Umeda moved as if electric currents were rippling through his seemingly bone-less limbs. Speed, precision, minute inflections of rhythm and angle – right down to his very fingertips, in a thrilling mix of styles that ranged from hip-hop to the equally impressive slow-motion and total stillness of Butoh.
